July security patch
July security patch

Google has recently started to release the monthly security patches to the Android OS in a bid by the company to make its operating system safe and secure against the various attacks that have been occurring to the Android devices around the world. Google always releases the monthly security patches in the first week of the month and the June security patch was released on June 5 last month. Sticking to its plans, Google has once again released the July security patch in the first week of July. The security patch has been released for the Pixel & Pixel XL devices released last year as well as the Nexus 6p & 5x which was released in 2015. Also, the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 are also getting the July security patch from Google. There is also the inclusion of Pixel C tablet from Google to add to the list.

Talking about the improvements in the July security patch, the July security patch has been known to fix 11 critical issues, 32 moderate and 94 high rated issues. Also, the July security patch will come in two patch level strings: (2017-07-01) partial security patch level string, and (2017-07-05) complete security patch level string.

Google also revealed that:

“The most severe of these issues is a critical security vulnerability in media framework that could enable a remote attacker using a specially crafted file to execute arbitrary code within the context of a privileged process. The severity assessment is based on the effect that exploiting the vulnerability would possibly have on an affected device, assuming the platform and service mitigations are turned off for development purposes or if successfully bypassed,”

As far as the update is concerned, the July security patch’s factory images have already been uploaded by Google and the OTA will reach the above mentioned devices soon. However, Reddit users having the Pixel phones have reported that they have been facing an issue where the update is unable to be installed on their phones. Google has already noted this issue and the company has promised a quick fix for the same.

  1. Hi, Im ino. I have a bootloop issue problem with my nexus 5x. Do you have any suggestion for fixing this problem without change any hardware?

    • Hello ino,
First of all, the bootloop issue on the Nexus 5x has been acclaimed by LG as a problem that they cannot fix through a software update as it is because of the defective hardware component on the Nexus 5x. As far as its solution is concerned, there is currently no solution other than a RMA from the company which should be free for you if you are in the warranty period. For this, you can go to the authorised service centre from LG and get your phone repaired. However, there is no fix for this issue via a software update unfortunately.
      Thank you
