OnePlus has been preparing to launch the OnePlus 5 which will be the flagship smartphone of the company this year. Earlier, OnePlus launched the OnePlus 2 and later the OnePlus 3/T which were the company’s flagship smartphones for 2015 and 2016 respectively. OnePlus has already confirmed that OnePlus 3/T users will be getting the Android O update. However, the users of OnePlus 2 have been complaining about the lack of updates on their device. The phone ever since launch has only received one major update which was the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update. The users of OnePlus 2 have been questioning OnePlus about the Nougat update for the device.
Now, OnePlus has finally responded to the queries of the users of OnePlus 2. Talking about the Nougat update to Android Authority, OnePlus said that the Nougat update will not be coming to the OnePlus 2 users which essentially means that the OnePlus 2 will not be supported by the company any further. Talking more about the issue, OnePlus said that “customer service has been telling customers this for a little while” and the company further added that “we’re happy about what we’re doing with the software. We already confirmed Android O will come for the OnePlus 3 and 3T. So [no Nougat for the OnePlus 2] isn’t new and we think people were aware of it.” OnePlus also gave the reason why the company won’t be able to give an update to the flagship of 2015 saying that:
When we built the OnePlus 2 we didn’t have the software infrastructure team in place we do now.
OnePlus’s refusal to update the phone comes after promises of 24 months of update support in the past by the company. However, one thing to note is that all the OnePlus phones come with an unlockable bootloader and the company offers warranty for unlocked phones as well. This means that the users of OnePlus 2 will have to install custom ROM to get a taste of Android Nougat on their devices.
